Rekeying Locks

When to Consider Rekeying Locks

To increase security at your home, you may think to replace the lock or ensure you have duplicate keys on hand. However, there are some times when rekeying locks may become necessary or may be a better solution. Here are a few of the times you might want to consider this option instead.

Moving In to a New Home

Even if you trust the person you bought the home from, you never know how many keys they've made or who they've given those keys to. Upon moving in, rekeying all the locks to your new property should be high on your list of priorities. This helps to ensure your safety and that of your belongings, especially during such a hectic time when things can easily be misplaced.

Upgrading to Keyless Entry

Just because the entry to your home no longer requires a key, doesn't mean that it has no key at all. You will need to have a locksmith come to your home and install the keyless entry, but most systems will still have a key that you can use if the batteries in the number pad go out or if you need to give a key to someone else.

Lost or Stolen Keys

Losing a key or having it stolen is a real inconvenience. Although it's tempting to just have a new key made, it is better to replace your lock and key or try rekeying locks. It's possible your key could have fallen out of your pocket and been buried in the dirt, but it's also possible it could have fallen into the hands of someone with criminal intentions.
